What is a Sousaphone? (Uses, Differences from the Tuba, Where It’s Used)

Quick FAQ

A sousaphone is a type of tuba designed for marching: a brass instrument shaped to wrap around the player's body. This article is a comprehensive guide covering sousaphone vs. tuba, typical weights and prices, fingering, and a hands-on review of a rare Nikkan sousaphone.

First of all, roughly a comparison table with the tuba!

QATubaSousaphone
What is the English spelling?TubaSousaphone
How much does it weigh? For a 4/4 size,
B♭/C models: about 9–10 kg
E♭/F models: about 7–9 kg
Resin (ABS) models: about 9–10 kg
Brass models: about 11–14 kg
What is the key? There are four basic types: B♭, C, E♭, and F.
The B♭ and C horns cover the lowest range.
The E♭ and F horns are often used in ensembles, solos, and old orchestral pieces.
The G bugle is an endangered species.
99% of horns on the market are B♭ horns.
A small number of E♭ horns are also available. (AMATI, Wessex)
As for C and F horns, there are commercially available models, even including helicon bass horns. (Cerveny, Wessex)
What are its uses and what are its stages of application? It is primarily intended to be played while seated. It can also be played standing up using a strap, but this may put strain on the lower back.
It is often used in more formal settings, such as with brass bands, orchestras, and wind ensembles.
Standing is the norm. Sitting down is quite difficult.
Standing outdoors is common, such as for marching and cheering at baseball games.
New Orleans brass bands have evolved in a unique way, and now they also perform a wide variety of energetic funk and hip-hop music.
How much does it cost?Examples of Yamaha models:
Student-grade YBB-201 II, ¥528,000
Custom model YCB-861, ¥2,057,000
Examples of Yamaha models:
ABS YSH-301 ¥704,000
Brass YSH-411 ¥1,188,000

Introduced! What is the charm of Sousaphone? ? I'll do my best to convey my charm!

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear Sousaphone is the bass part of the brass band that supports baseball.
Or the big white instrument at the end of the marching band!

As for the range, it is the same as the B♭ tuba in the brass band.
It's simply wrapped differently so it can be played while marching.

The appearance of the musical instrument is flashy, but you think that the role is plain! !

It's pretty cool, Sousaphone!

As a genre, the New Orleans Brass Band is the closest.

This 'parade format' is terrifying!
It's the coolest way to create a modern sound with just a minimalistic musical instrument.

This is Hot 8 Brass Band. Traditional New Orleans brass band style.
The way they parade through the crowd is just like a festival!
Seeing the happy expressions on the faces of the audience walking along with me makes me feel like, "It doesn't matter what the details are! As long as the mood is good! Recommended for those who are tired of playing a stiff classical music brain!

The sound of the black American big bro (Bennie Pete passed away at the age of 45), whose ring of the Sousaphone is about to be cut off, is also the best.
*I think you've been told that you must be a tuba because you're big!

I wonder if this New Orleans brass band can't be seen in Japan? Just when I thought about it, at the Koenji Festival on 2025/10,Dirty Dozen Brass Band We invited Mr. Kirk Joseph from as a guest and listened to a collaboration performance with Funk Up Brass Band! It was fun
It was a great sound even when I heard it from behind. Also, the Funk Up Brass Band's Sousa player was also really good...

Recently, this genre seems to have evolved uniquely, and it is interesting to fuse with hip-hop.

I've summarized the words 'Sousaphone weight' and 'Sousaphone price' that can be searched with the Sousaphone!

As for the weight, it's not on the official website, googling it in the United States? I'm taking the information on the page without question.
Sorry if it wasn't right (;´・ω・)

The 'model' link is linked to each manufacturer's website, so if you're interested, you can fly it (/・ω・)/

I'm really curious about the Wessex CC Helicon!!! Plus, it's on sale for about 40% off as of July 2025 lol.
Is this a sale before the 5-valve model comes out?
And Jupiter's half-FRP sousa is a mystery…why is it heavier than an all-brass one, even though the body is FRP and the bell is brass?!
I'm also curious about the super light and super cheap sousa from a manufacturer called Thomann…

A little sideways, picking up a rare instrument! !

When I was researching the world's Sousaphone, I saw a lot of interesting instruments, so I'll introduce them!

Cervenny. The Kaiser Baritone is rare, but it attacks with the front bell.

Chimbasso, which has the same range as the F tuba, is fully equipped with vertical and horizontal styles.

This is the predecessor of the Sousaphone, the helicone bass. In addition to the B tube, there are no blind spots with F tubes and ES pipes.
Compared to the Sousaphone, it seems that the sound is sharp because there are many straight pipes. I've never seen or heard it live.

From AMATI, an ES tube Sousaphone entered. I can't think of a use... For a small child...?

WessexEntry from CC helicon bass. Around 2025/7, it was on sale at 40% off.
As a C-tube player, I'm seriously interested in getting one.

In Wessex, B♭ chimbasso is sold at an clearance price. No, who would buy this...
Even F-tube Chimbasso has only a small turn in Italian opera... Do you want to create history? ?

Wessex is a parade of other bad instruments. Just my random scribbles below.
BBB 6/4 Compensated Tuba 'Leviathan' 6/4 size, 3P1R competition, Uprightl bass weighing only 9.5 kg
I really want it if it can be used as a marching tuba with a mouse pipe convertible...

F/EB TRAVEL TUBA, 'BUBBIE 5' – TF135 F-tube/ES tube convertible travel tuba. It weighs 3.25 kg and is smaller than the euphonium.
Duplex BB Euphonium - EP105 P Double Bell Euphonium: The one I thought was only in the museum.
French C Tuba - TC236 P French tuba! It's the one I use in the paintings of the exhibition.

I can't sleep anymore...

What is the fingering of the Sousaphone? There are only 3 valves, but what is the lowest range? ?

Conclusion!

It's the same as the B♭ tube tuba!
For those who want to know just the finger number quickly,Fingering chart pageIt's good to see
On this page, I will briefly explain how brass instruments work.
For those worried that "with only three valves it can't play below E

I'll explain how brass instruments work!

The basics of brass instruments are just cylinders.
There are several types of sound (*) that can be produced depending on the length.
You decide which sound to make by how close your lips are and how you breathe.
With just that, you can't get all the sounds of Doremi Faso La Shido,
By attaching a valve or slide, you can get all the sounds.

*This isnatural overtonesI say.

This is about the basic length of a brass instrument when you don't push the valve.
B♭ Trumpet: 135cm
Horn High F tube: 180cm
Trombone, euphonium, horn B♭ tube: 270cm
Horn F tube: 360 cm
B♭ tuba: 540 cm
As the range of the instrument drops by one octave, the length of the tube is doubled.

Just connect the aluminum pipes of the home center to 135 cm, connect the plastic funnel with a rubber hose, and attach the trumpet mass piece.
Ara Mystery! It sounds like a trumpet! What am I doing 15 years ago?

トランペット吹きでは無いので、ヘッタクソでも許してw

So, without pushing the valvenatural overtonesYou can get quite a lot of sounds just by doing that.
Specifically, it is based on the law of physics, and the following sounds can be produced.
*This is a sheet music I wrote with a lot of hard work using Excel's auto shape about 20 years ago.

1Two octaves below B tuning.
Trumpets can't produce this, but most other brass instruments can. Many people think they can't.
2The so-called lower B.
3Middle F. On brass instruments other than the horn, this is the core note of the range.
4B tuning
5If you play it without thinking, the pitch will stray!
6It's not an extremely off-key note, but if you try to "listen to my high notes," it tends to go up a little.
7A disappointing note that comes out when you try to play a cool high B. It's not normally used.
8One octave above B tuning. This isn't the limit!
9It can be produced open.
10,11On instruments other than the horn, it becomes increasingly difficult to produce.
12HiF!
13~The intervals between notes become narrower. Valves are almost meaningless, and you should be able to get similar notes with any fingering.
It's all about imagination, imagination. If you believe, the note will come out.

With this table in mind, let's explain the misalignment of the pitch!

I won't go into detail about it, but first of all, let's keep in mind about the deviation of natural overtones when playing.
For example, the default is to appear low, such as D above tuning B.
It seems that recent musical instruments have improved a lot with a miracle technique, but if you try to understand the basic characteristics, you won't get lost when adjusting the pitch.

A valve system was devised because this natural overtone alone would not fill up all of the do-re-mi-fa-so-ra-shido.
As a basic design of a brass instrument with 3 valves, it is designed to be '1 sound from the opening, the 2nd 0.5 tone since the opening, and 1.5 tones from the opening for the 3rd'.
*Actually, since number 3 is often played in combination with No. 2, it is often designed to be reduced by about 1.6 tones.
In particular, there is also an aim to correct the difference in pitch when blowing with the combination of '1st + 2nd + 3'.

This mechanism has a structural drawback: 'It's not made to get the correct pitch when two or more valves are blown together.'
If you press the valve number 1 of the B-tube instrument, 'the entire tube becomes longer and becomes an AS tube' → Is it OK so far?
If you press the 2nd number by lowering it by a semitone from there, the second valve is 'length to lower the semitone from the B tube'.
It's equipped, but it doesn't have a 'length to lower a semitone from the AS tube'! ! That means.

Simply put, you can see at a glance that the length of the trumpet's branch pipe and the length of the tuba's branch tube are different.
It means that a longer tube is needed to further lower the sound from a long tube.
That's why there was a trigger for adjusting the pitch to correct the pitch.

And there are limits to these 3 valves.
That's right, 'If you press 3 at the same time, only 3 notes will go down (and it will go up).'
It's not enough to go down by one octave from the second overtone to the first overtone.
How to fill this first and second overtones has brought about the development of the brass instrument valve system!

So, two valves are attached to the bass strombone.
For euphonium and tubaCompensation System (YAMAHA official commentary)was attached
Also, if it's a tuba, it can now be equipped with a 5th or 6th tube.
4 valves without compensating is not enough.

Well, you can't make a low sound with a Sousaphone with only 3 valves!

Don't worry! There are forced overtones!
The fingering is as follows! Forced overtones from the ES below E!

Yes, even if there is no valve, the second overtone → the 1st overtone will be filled!
Starting to blow from the sound of B below, B~~, A~~,G~~,F~~It's going down

'ES~~~~'

'Esuuuuu~~~~~'
What

So much,ReallyWhoaThat's itIf you go down while imagining it, I think you can probably get it out lol

Well, it's disgusting and disgusting.
If you believe it, it will come out (asserted).

As long as the ES below comes out, it's this one.
After that, if the valve is lowered by a semitone, C or H will come out!

If that's the case, even with a 5-valve or compensating instrument, push the valve tightly and blow C or H.
Forced overtones have a shorter tube, so you can get that kind of sound.

It is better to hold the valve tightly if you want to stretch it out with a whole note.
Forced overtones are easier when playing short sounds or fine passages.

Middle and high school students with 3 valve tuba and euphonium!
Let's surprise those around us with the sound very low.

And this man solves everything with 3 valves and an image in the brain...

Well, the reappearance of Nat McIntosh, which was mentioned earlier.

I explained the value of 5 valves and compensating a lot, but...
3 bulbs in the tuba are enough! No need to insert or remove branch pipes or triggers! !
The sound you imagined in your head comes out as the sound! ! I think it's proven...

Come on! Here is a review article of Nikkan's Sousaphone! !

In the first place, I just wanted to spread the article on Nikkan's Sousaphone below.
However, since Google teachers didn't rate it at all, I added a lot of information and made it a comprehensive article on Sousaphone!
*There is no one to search for 'Nikkan Sousaphone review' or something like that.

So, from here on, it will be my all-you-can-eat corner! ! ! !

I bought it on impulse out of stress. Now I'm just soaking it all in.

Even though I haven't found a place to work, I accidentally won a bid on Yahoo Auctions.
Let's write a review article because it's a big deal.
First impressions, detailed images and measurements, comparison and analysis with major manufacturers, impressions of various blowing methods,
Let's go with the gorgeous composition of the video of the demonstration!
In the second half, we also posted topics about shoulder problems and practice mutes!

[First Impression] Wait... are my overtones ringing too much?

I met the exhibitor at a park somewhere in the Kanto region and tried playing on the spot.

First of all, the basics of everything, at the middle F2, at a volume that makes it easy to blow.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I'll try blowing.
The reverberation from the bell, or rather, the overtone sounds are amazing.

A long time ago, an acquaintance had a little bit of the Alexander's gold brass B♭ tube.
It has a gorgeous and dark sound that reminds me of that.

Maybe 60 years after manufacturing? I think it's been more than that
It's impressive that it can be played normally, or rather, it produces more than normal sound.

I'll try to explain what's the matter in the second half while looking at the specs (゚Д゚)ノ

Let's show you the pictures of the details

Now that you have it at hand, let's take some pictures.
First, the back view.

nikkan_sousauthone
Appearance from behind

It's pretty sparkling and pretty, but when I bought it, it was in a state of silver.
This one is nickel plated. Not silver plated.
So I put a felt buff on the electric drill and polished it with metal polish.
It would have been fine if I had an electric polisher, but it wasn't there, so I used an electric drill. I think it's probably been polished for about 6 hours (´・ω・`)
I feel like I've regained the brilliance of the past.

By the way, the felt buff was not good enough for random thunder.
It was a cheap model, but when I applied the necessary pressure to polish it, the torque was insufficient and it stopped immediately and I couldn't polish it much.
The electric drill can go up to 3000 rpm. It takes a lot of time because you can only polish the range as you can see.

Random Thunder (left) and Variable Electric Drill (Right) Line-up that doesn't seem like a Sousaphone impression article

↓ I probably needed something like this!

As a result,Bell's plated was a little baldBut not.

*MaybePossibly Satin SilverThere is also a slight presence

That's fine, this bald part, the mysterious stains of yesteryear were stuck and I couldn't remove it at all ( ;∀;)
How many hours have you polished it here?

nikkan_sousauthone
This bald one! ! However, it is carved with great engravings!

By the way, it was like this before polishing with felt buff.
It would have been better if I could have taken a BEFORE photo of the bell as well.

How can I say it, the color like the fossil of the excavated ammonite? ?
This is good, but it's good.

Are they similar?

*! ! Be careful! ! *
If you do this with a silver-plated instrument, it's absolutely useless! !
Silver polish removes dark spots due to chemical reactions, so there is basically no need to polish it like this.
Silver polish does not have that much polishing power.
Nickel plated is a finish that tends to be used in old and introductory musical instruments.
This instrument requires fairly aggressive metal polish to restore, so take care.

Next, the serial number engraved on the bell?

nikkan_sousauthone
No.15

Isn't the serial number really young? ? ? ? Double digits is a lot.
Maybe this isn't a prototype or anything...
I'm wondering if the instrument was manufactured.
NIKKAN and YAMAHA started working together in 1963.
After that, the Nikkan brand continued until 1970, so is it around this point?
Since the model number of the instrument is not written, I do not know the model name at all.
Since it was also mentioned in SH-111 in another blog, maybe it is SH-111?

That's right, there must have been a serial number at the piston...
No.20 65722 1923
It looks like it was made in 1965.
Amazing, it's an instrument from 60 years ago.
Was it made four years before the first human arrival on the moon?

Hmm~~~? ? ? ? No.20? ?
Someone took the No20 bell by mistake,
Is the bell of No15 sticking instead? ? ? ?

Maybe:Nikoichi

Now, check the details.
The mouse pipe is a 2-stage type that can be easily changed to a position that is easy to blow.
Although it has a normal structure for a Sousaphone, it is well thought out so that it can handle a fairly wide range of physiques.

And the piping is such that the main tuning slide is sandwiched here without directly connecting the mouse pipe to the valve.

Eh... are you going to do that for a long time? ? ? There will be more resistance.
I feel like a normal tuba has a tuning tube after it passes through the third valve, but...
*As of the old baritone horn and euphoria, there are quite a lot of tuning pipes on the mouse pipe like this.

nikkan_sousauthone
Long mouse pipe
*Supplement: An example of earning the length of a lead pipe. The one with a long tuning tube before entering the piston.
It's almost an old instrument. It has a strong resistance and tends to be difficult to get out. Since the overall tube length does not change, the capacity of the air pillar as a musical instrument will also decrease.
nikkan_sousauthone
Well, I can't store all the tuning slides lol

It's unclear whether the tuning slide doesn't fit all the specifications or the modifications.
Well, if you play outdoors in the summer, it will be quite expensive, but it's good...

The arrangement of the valve slide tube is quite good.
Both the 1st and 2nd tubes can be accessed while playing!

nikkan_sousauthone
The 1st and 2nd pipes are easy to operate! The number 3 is a little tight and the tube is short, so it's difficult to operate while playing.
nikkan_sousauthone
It's become much more beautiful after polishing from the ammonite color!

Bell looks like this!
At first glance, it looks like inner gold, but it's probably finished with lacquer finish.
But it's cool with a color like gold brass!

nikkan_sousauthone
Considering the years of 60 years, it's pretty pretty!

How many kilograms does a brass sooth phone weigh?

For the time being, measure from the bell.
3.95 kg with bell alone! ! !

I don't have any other Sousa phones, so I can't tell if they're relatively light or heavy.
In my personal opinion, it's 'really heavy'. Your body will become silly.
The bell alone is roughly the same as the weight of one medium-sized euphonium.

nikkan_sousauthone
The bell alone weighs almost 4kg!

Next is the overall weight measurement.

nikkan_sousauthone
The overall weight is...
What!!!!

13.0kg! ! !

No wonder it's heavy! !

When I measured the weight of the attached shoulder pad later, it was 200g, so I removed it.12.8kgThat's where...

By the way...

B&S 3198 PT-6P

B&S 3198 PT-6P is 11.85kg.
5/4 size, 4P1R heavyweight size C tube, is this weight?

Mr. nikkan, what does 12.8kg mean when you only have 3 pistons?

Next is YEB321-S, the representative of the little tuba.

YEB321-S

7.55kg! It's really light in many ways, and it's a good instrument for playing the melody line and solo.
You can do most of what you can do with the F tube! Should be!

Finally, measure the bore size.

nikkan_sousauthone
Bore inner diameter! The actual measurement is 17.5mm, but considering the error with the catalog value, the specs are about 17.8mm.

The 3198 B&S bore diameter is 19.0mm (18.7mm in actual measurement)
The bore diameter of YEB-321S is 17.5mm (measured by 17.2mm by actual measurement).
So, you can see that NIKKAN's Sousa boa is as thin as an ES tube.

Finally, the diameter of the bell.

nikkan_sousauthone
Bell diameter

I thought it would be kind of small, but it's a little small, 610mm!

Well, what I learned from this analysis is...

King 2350
2350 The back side is also quite similar.

The original story of NIKKAN Sousaphone is like KING's 2350.
The long lead pipes and the handling of 1 to 3 valves are roughly the same, but look alike.

http://www.chisham.com/tips/bbs/aug2002/messages/104202.html
Looking at this area, it seems that there were quite a lot of 610mm bells around the 1930s.

On the contrary, it seems that there was a large size instrument that you don't see now.

1925 CONN GRAND JUMBO 46K It seems that there used to be such a big Sousaphone. Bell diameter is 711mm and weighs 18kg...

The feature of King's 2350 is that it's light! I've visited several sites,
Even though it's a brass sou, it says 23 pounds (10.4 kg).
Thin boa, long mouse pipe, 660mm bell, but light weight.
It can be guessed that it is easy for beginners and small players to play.

I also tried to support the review articles from overseas sites to support it.
The lightweight structure is directly linked to ease of handling and good response.
It seems that some people think that the sound is too light and the sound is thin, according to the general review of the reliable musical instruments on site.

On the other hand, Nikkan
Thin bore, long mouse pipe, small but fucking heavy bell
It's a slightly mysterious combination.

First of all, there is one merit that a thin boa physically brings. The piston stroke is short.
The piston action is extremely light, and it's pretty easy to play fast passages.
Even though it is a B tube, it feels quite small.

Conn's souza has a thick boa instead of a thick bore, making it an elliptical hole in the piston to make a short stroke.

↑ I don't know when it was, but CONN's elliptical piston is good for small turns. 'NIKKAN's is a normal circular piston.'

Next, let's write about the sounds that come out specifically.

As for what kind of sound comes out from the instruments with the above structure, it sounds like you're stuck.
Also, the overtones are terrible. When you relax and blow, are the two of you blowing? I get as many overtones as I think.
If you blow the lower B♭, the top F will sound together.
If you pinch the bell with your finger, it will stop, so you can see that the fucking heavy bell is resounding.
Since the 3198 and YEB321-S of the B&S I own do not produce this kind of sound, I tried to describe it as Alex's B-tube.
*Areki's B tube was only borrowed a little more than 20 years ago!
※※Added. I feel like this kid is tone deaf. Maybe the 3rd tube is too long.
  1 + 3 C fits normally, and D or 2 + 3 FIS, which blows only with 3, is extremely low...
Is it enough to somehow correct the open sound sequence? I'm wondering if I should cut the 3rd tube a little.

However, it's a blow back from the instrument, or rather, the resistance is quite strong. Probably, it comes from long lead pipes and thin boa.
If you put too much breath into your breath, you will not be able to breathe (too much blow-in).
Especially around the bass F1, there is a little resistance, so if you don't play it carefully, it will 'miss off' and the overtones will stop.
If you get excited and take it to support baseball, you won't be able to breathe and you will be a little unsatisfactory.
On the other hand, even if you combine it with a mouthpiece like a PT-50P with a large throat diameter, it will crack, so it's not good enough.
However, if you were told that, like the 3/4 B tube, if you just blow the bottom C2 a little harder, the sound will be cracked and you will feel that the capacity is insufficient.
Or rather, it feels a little strange. In the first place, I feel like I can't breathe that far, and the sound of about 4/4 is enough.

To put it the other way around, the beauty is that you can hear the 'sounding sound' even if you don't try hard.
This is quite important, unlike outdoor marching, which requires absolute volume.
Assuming that you are using a microphone, if you want to play FUNK or something like 'a low-pitched sound that keeps playing in the background without any rest at all'
It feels pretty good to keep playing energy saving.
For the B tube, it's really easy to play when you combine it with a silky GEIB with a thin throat and a strong revving back.

If you play by copying and playing YoungBloodBrassband's New Blood or something like that,
Seriously, I don't have even a second break, so after about 3 minutes, I'm like, 'Stop it! I'm going to die because I can't breathe!'
I'm really grateful that I can play energy saving.

In the case of a 5/4 C tube, a light reaction would give off a crisp and grainy sound.
NIKKAN's soother feels moist and has a solid, non-smooth sound.

The sound of the lips vibrating as a lead is clearly audible in the C tube.
As for the Sousaphone, the corners of the sound are rounded, and it sounds a bit like an electric bass... I wonder if this will be conveyed...

No, I'm sure it hasn't been communicated yet.
I want to convey this feeling, feeling, and feeling to you who are looking at this site with all my might.
I think I'll compare it to rice so that it resonates with Japanese people.

If you want the sound of the C tube on 5/4, you can clearly see each grain of rice, which you can clearly see.
Like a tightly packed bento box of rice grains merging into one.

I'm not saying that fluffy rice is good.
Compressed lunch boxes that save space are also welcome if you want to climb a hard traverse. You can get a lot of calories in one bite.
Like summer tires and studless tires, it is important to use them properly according to the scene.

I'll try adding cute illustrations so that the image can be conveyed.

Could you please understand?

No! ! I don't know if it's likened to rice! ! Are there any videos?

We have also prepared a demonstration video for you.
Please enjoy the rich Nikkan sound. It's a short video of about 2 minutes.
While imitating the drums with Voypa, I made a suitable baseline and played it.
The scratch sound part is about two weeks after the development of the playing method, so I'm not very proficient (/・ω・)/

Also, it's a multiple recording because there's no one to play with me lol
As stated on Youtube, we are currently recruiting as band members!

↓↓ If you feel like you're going to die from lack of oxygen, solve it with your muscles! ! I tried hard for several months, but it didn't work for me, Power Breeze!
The VO2 MAX of the road bike didn't grow either lol

※As an aside
After getting the musical instrument, when I recorded it for the first time, I was surprised that it was five times as bad as I expected.
When I consulted with Chatgpt, he said something quite good, so let's share it!

Sousaphone girls
↑ Mr. GPT.
When I asked GPT to draw a beautiful JK figure with a Sousaphone,

A tuba passes between the thighsThe illustration has become an exquisitely silly feeling.
You can feel the difference between the resolution of Moe and the resolution of the general public of Sousaphone...

I want to blow it so that it sounds like an electric bass, but I feel like I'm breathing out, and the popping sound comes off! 'Maybe it's not good if you don't do it more politely than you think.' It sounds like an orchestra or a brass band, but it's not the end, it's not the end, it's just blowing.

The difference between the sense of the orchestra and the baseline of the groove of life!

The feeling that the elevator player 'shakes the customer's hips with one finger'
To reproduce with a tuba, 'interval', 'accuracy' and 'touch feeling' are the key to recreating it!

It's the feeling of shaking a customer's hips with one finger! I see, you will learn! ! !

TubaGuy

The drawing is a bit silly, but the GPT is not to be underestimated because it gives a good answer such as consultation on playing techniques!
It's interesting because the mouthpiece reviews also teach me things like that lol
In the above video, I also tried blowing it with a light feeling and the timing.
*I just tried it, but I didn't say it was done

By the way, let's go to the corner where there is a Sousa phone from here! !

Sousaphone is too heavy! You have shoulders! ! Do something about it!

Neotech Neotech Shoulder Pad for Souser Phone
Neotech Neotech Shoulder Pad for Souser Phone

Well, the first thing I thought about when I got this 12.8kg Sousaphone...

My shoulder hurts too much... !

For a while, I used to wrap a towel or cushion around my musical instrument.
Because it slips quickly, the cushioning is not good enough, and the left shoulder ends up hurting.
It's a little expensive, but I bought a special Neotech item!

As an impression after using it for about 2 months, I bought it and it was a great answer!
Because it contains a gel-like cushion material.
Even after a few hours of practice, my shoulders became less painful locally.

It doesn't shift like a towel or a cushion, so there is no stress of adjusting the position.
Also, if it's durable, I can't complain about it, but it's only about two months old, so I can't say anything about it.
I'll add my thoughts when I feel like it after about a year.

Recommended for those who are in a hurry and are playing Sousaphone and suffer from pain in their shoulders!

Due to the structure of the instrument, the weight is concentrated on the left side,
It will resonate all over your body, but at that time, don't overdo it and take a break.

[Verification] Can the mute for the tuba be used for the Sousaphone? Is there no practice mute?

Wait, before we get to the point.
So how many people have the trouble of bringing a Sousaphone home to the house?

People who want to play Sousaphone at home but are having trouble with the practice mute

I'm sorry, I've gotten off topic.
Because I had a Yubon practice mute (Little silencer) at home,
I'll talk about what would happen if I put this on for 0.0001% of you.

Yupon Mute Little Silencer
Yupon Mute Little Silencer for tuba Black ML without tuning tube

In fact, Yupon's little silencer is quite abundantly available for tuba.
Product information page
Match information page by model

We have an M/L size that fits a 5/4 size C tube/B tube.
Of course, it's a perfect fit for B&S 3198.

By the way, when you look inside the mute, it looks like this.
About 8mm thick? Is it about 10-15 cm in length? There are two pipes, and you can take your breath away from here.

Since the original thick tuba bell is narrowed down to such a thin cylinder, the sense of resistance increases considerably.
The feeling of blowing in the low range changes quite a bit. However, it doesn't feel like it's not a practice level.

As for the volume, the volume is limited to the volume that a normal person is calling with a slightly louder voice.
You can't practice with your family in the middle of the night, but there is a clear difference in noise noise than when you play without anything.
It may be difficult to have a house like an old folk house, but modern wooden houses are sufficiently muted to a level that does not disturb the neighborhood.

As for the pitch... well, please guess.
Even if you make a mistake, you can't try to practice the pitch correction while doing long tones lol
(Although the model with a tuning pipe is also wondering how good the pitch is. The difference is 10,000 yen...)

However, I can practice enough to play the musical instrument so that I can play and play the sheet music.
Much better than doing nothing.

Especially if you don't have a place for activities like me, you may never really blow for the rest of your life.
I'm really grateful for the existence of the practice mute that can be easily put on a capo.

It's good to rent a public facility, but it's not empty,
There are quite a few psychological hurdles to rent as an individual.
*You can rent a soundproof room of 24 tatami mats for 1,500 yen for 3 hours, so it is really recommended when it is vacant.

Look up here,
'The structure of mute is simple! You can make your own, right?'
That's what you thought! ! !

Tuba mute self-made
Many do not speak

The above garbage has been lying around at home for many years.
Well, I think you should buy it properly! To avoid wasting time!

I've also tried to use a urethane sponge to close the gap, but...
After all, the sound leaked out and I couldn't talk about it (´ω`)

Alright, let's get back together and go next.
If you make it a C/B♭ tube, you can attach it to the YEB-321S, which is 3/4 size.

Kapo

Hmm~~~ Well, it feels like you've inserted a normal straight mute?
The recommended size is M/S, so it's over 2 times.
As a practice mute...

It can be used as normal!

Well, if you prepare the M/S size and compare the blowing side by side,
It may be better to use a just size M/S.
The sound is quiet enough, and you can use it without any problems in practicing like rubbing your fingers.

What is the difference between 256kbps and 512kbps in mp3?
What is the difference between 4000 yen earphones and 12000 yen earphones?
I feel like the difference is something like, 'I don't care if I dare to compare and look for Ara.' . .
That's right, you don't have to dare to lower your satisfaction by comparing it with the good ones...

Now, it's finally time to get to the point! !
Can you use Yubon's Practice Mute on Sousaphone? ! ! !

It's installed! ! !

A drawing of a Sousa phone mute like a movie thief
?!?!?

Yes, it's going to be like this.

No more movie thief! Am I the only one who remembers?

If you wear a bell, you won't be addicted to mute.
It means that you should put a mute directly instead of the bell.

So, as for how to use it as a practice mute,

It can be used as normal!

And,

You can adjust the 'winding feeling' and 'volume' by attaching or removing the screws for fixing the bell.
If you remove the 3 screws, the volume will increase considerably, but the resistance will decrease and it will be easier to blow.
This is a bit of knowledge that can be used from tomorrow.

I guess the pitch is within the permissible range as a giri tube...
It doesn't have a bell.
It may be a little disgusting for people who have perfect pitch,
I wonder if I can forgive it if it's just practice.
It's like pulling out the tuning tube just barely and somehow... (and sometimes falling out lol).

*If you try to play a low-pitched karaoke while playing a model performance on a CD, you may go crazy because the pitch doesn't match!

The conclusion is that
'There is no Practice Mute for Sousaphone, so if you have a tuba, put it in a suitable way.'

closing greeting

It's not a bad idea to buy a Sousa phone on Yahoo! Auctions!
Let's enjoy bass life too! (I'm tired of writing, so it's appropriate)
